Look at activities of daily living — bathing, dressing, eating, toileting, moving safely. If two or more now need help, or if there has been a fall, a wandering episode or a medication error, it is time for an assessment. The assessment is free and gives you a written answer either way.

Words you will hear

ADLs Activities of daily living — bathing, dressing, eating, toileting, moving. Care levels are set by how many need help.
Assisted living Residential care with help for daily routines, but not a nursing ward. Nurse on call rather than at the bedside.
Memory care A secured unit with a higher staff ratio and fixed routine, designed for dementia.
Palliative care Care aimed at comfort and symptom control rather than cure. It can run for months alongside treatment.
Deprescribing Reviewing and stopping medicines that no longer help — often the fastest way to reduce falls and confusion.
Step-down care Supervised recovery between hospital and home, usually two to eight weeks.
